Ask The Experts About Nanomedicine

John asks…
Which major for nanomedicine?
I’ve been planning on going into nanomedicine (the medical application of nanotechnology/nanobots), for quite some time, but so far, every time I try to look up what I should major in, I get a large range of answers. Professors, as well as people online always suggest options that are quite broad. They often suggest Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, BioChem/BioPhysics, Materials Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. These are simply way too broad for me to know which one is actually the best suited to an eventual career in nanomedicine. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best major for the field, and if so, why?
Thanks.

May I suggest the following process, some of which you have probably already done?
1. Read about nanomedicine (you’ve done this, I am sure).
2. Identify specific areas of nanomedicine that interest you (cancer therapy, sensors, etc.)
3. Find out who is doing such research and where they are working (the school and department)
4. Note which departments seem to have the most research of interest to you. Realize that some of these may be graduate level departments. (Pharmacology, Oncology, etc.)
5. Find out what undergraduate majors are the bet lead-ins for the graduate school departments. You may have to ask the graduate departments if they can provide statistical information about the undergraduate majors of their graduate students.
If possible, attend an undergraduate college such as Rice for Bioengineering or U. Michigan where nanomedicine research is taking place. Try to find an undergraduate university where undergraduates can participate in nanomedicine research, e.g. Michigan, see link below. I have given Rice and Michigan as two examples. There are many more that you can research for yourself.
