Ask The Experts About Nanotechnology Medicine Field

James asks…

What can I do with a bachelor’s degree in Nanotechnology?

I’ve completed 2 years of a nanotechnology course, with 2 more years left to finish. I’ve come to realise that there aren’t any jobs available, and the salary for a researcher in nanotechnology is very low for the amount of effort. I considered changing to Chemical Engineering, as it is a more general field, which attracts a high salary, especially in Western Australia where I live. The probably is, this would require me to do 3.5 more years of study to get a bachelors in chemical engineering. The course is 4 years, and although ive completed 2 years of nanotechnology, I almost have to start from scratch (minus a semester). I’ve considered completing my nanotechnology degree, and applying for some kind of post-graduate course. The only post-graduate degree that will give me a completely different career path is medicine. I want to be able to help people, and make a difference, but nearly everybody i’ve talked to has told me to stay away from medicine. Are there any other post-grad courses that I could do? I have a strong interest in science and want to be able to make a difference, and also would like to earn more than an auto-mechanic.

Should i just do chemical engineering and accept my wasted years, or do a post-grad degree?

You have a couple of choices.
1. Work as a Research assistant under a Nanotech Ph.D. (I think Pay is around 30K)
2. Work outside the field. (Business likes people who have Science Backgrounds, often putting them in sales and management jobs)
3. Go to grad School for Nanotechnology.
4. Go to Grad School for something else. (MD, JD, MBA, and even some Engineering master’s degrees will be options for you with your strong science background)
